Sweden 2021 Risky experiments

Workmanship | Material

After entering the era of industrialism, people are receiving more and more purchase options, soaked into a whirlpool of consumerism unprecedentedly. Meanwhile, uninterrupted and repetitive production short the life of furniture, reducing the cost objectively. As a result, less and less people can maintain a piece of furniture longer, it seemed that constructing a lasting relationship with objects become an increasingly difficult thing among industrial production.

The aesthetic importance of the downward extension of diversity - workmanship of risk

"Art of workmanship takes over where design stops, and design begins to fail to control the appearance of the environment." - David Pye. Apparently, when it comes to minimal design, riskiness was one of design factors which could leave enough margins for the engagement related to workmanship. Either from sketch or material which was about intuition as well as intention related design. Minimalism needs a proper surprise, in order to create its uniqueness for people to enjoy longer.

Crack | Random | Imperfect

Material dominance the crack I found in that log inspired me the way how wood released tension by itself naturally. it was interesting since I did not have any design brief before I met this log, Then, I come up with ideas how to cut the log and so on, meanwhile, both the dimension of log and the way of showing crack aesthetically as well as rationally guided me in my lamp design. This small experiment made me aware the dominance from material, respect was mutual.

Trust material and reality

Stick | Branches | Hanger

Splitting wood came into my horizon as a symbolic way, because we usually use different saws with different jigs as long as we could cut it following our intention. Conversely, wood was self-split by following its fibers. If it is more equal for this trunk, also, I found the strength of the structure of the branches. updating the structure after using.I was practicing changing my position in design, no longer deciding materials subjectively, but intending to make materials present themselves, which requires my design to be primitive and rough, but objective.

Material dignity

‘The crafts can restore to them what the workmanship of certainty in quantity- production denies them’ (David Pye,1968) From mass production view, they wished to delete all physical materiality which material have by workmanship of certainty, they hope they could shape material as we did in Rhinos. But as I mentioned before, denial created ‘an increasingly vacuum’ between material and craft, accelerating consumerism as well, therefore, I wanted to bring ‘them’ back.
